What is a discharge?

One of the reasons people file bankruptcy is to get their debts discharged.  A discharge is a court order which releases you from personal liability for certain debts known as dischargable debts and prevents the creditor from taking any action against you to collect those debts.  Some debts cannot be discharged (i.e. student loans).
